On Yer Bike Stuart!
Fundraising for My Name'5 Doddie Foundation
AB2K's Stuart Gardner is fundraising for My Name'5 Doddie Foundation, which supports the charity MND, by joining a team attempting to cycle from Cardiff to Edinburgh. The 554.5 mile cycle from Cardiff (Principality stadium) to Edinburgh (Murrayfield) in 55 hours will arrive on time to deliver the match ball for the Scotland v Wales Six Nations match. The cycle will be over two days and nights and each rider will pedal approx 180 miles.
'It's going to be a really tough ride' says Stuart. I've been out on my bike cycling at night and weekends to train. I'm hoping for a good southerly wind to give us a push!'
Doddie Weir OBE was one of rugby’s most recognisable personalities. He earned 61 caps for Scotland during a successful playing career, represented the British and Irish Lions on their tour to South Africa in 1997, and won championships with his two club sides, Melrose and Newcastle Falcons.
A talented, committed and athletic lock forward, Doddie then faced his biggest challenge. In June 2017 the Scot revealed he was suffering from Motor Neuron Disease. From the outset, Doddie was driven to help fellow sufferers and seek ways to further research into this, as yet, incurable condition.
In November 2017, Doddie and his trustees launched the registered charity, My Name’5 Doddie Foundation. Their vision is simple: A World Free of MND.
The number “5” is a special number for the Foundation. It features in the Foundation’s name and is a reference to Doddie’s playing number for his clubs, Melrose and Newcastle Falcons, and the jersey he wore when he earned his 61 caps for Scotland.
'I'm delighted to be part of this team, working to contribute to a fantastic charity. I'll be travelling light, with my bottle of Irn Bru, and a couple of cans of Red Bull to see me on my way!'
Good luck Stuart!
