Radisson Red Glasgow enlists AB2K to remove giant parasol from Sky Bar

Published Date: 07/06/2023

There's a very special parasol nine floors up in Glasgow's most stylish nightspot The Red Sky Bar at The Radisson Red hotel. It was installed when the hotel was built in 2018. It has integrated lights and heaters, making it exceptionally heavy. When opened it can withstand winds up to 55mph - very handy for the wonderfully seasonal Glasgow weather. It's an enormous one-piece parasol and too big to be taken in the stairs or lift.

AB2K was called in to retrieve it using the 70t crane extending 46m boom plus 16m fly jib at 40 degrees offset working at 35m lift radius. The pictures show the 4m parasol being securely lifted and transported back to ground. After finishing the job, the AB2K flexible Liebherr crane was retracted back into position, then its wheels down for a drive back to base. As you can see from the carpark shots AB2K road cranes can work in the tightest spots as space available on sites is often constricted.

The stylish sky bar in Glasgow is well worth a visit boasting incredible panoramic views over the River Clyde, Squinty Bridge and Finnieston Crane. But what happens next? An excuse to visit for an off-duty cocktail under the new parasol! We're here for the heavy lifting, whatever the weather.
